Reign of Philosopher Kings: An Obituary

When Dr. Manmohan Singh was crowned India’s Prime Minister, it was a historic first. In a country of just under a billion and as many ignorant souls (educated as well as un-educated), two Philosophers (one Muslim and a Sikh) are heading the Government. It is unfortunate that both are just acting as the nominal heads wielding little real power.

Despite people attributing their inability to act as the symptoms of unflinching loyalty to the Gandhi family (in Manmohan’s case) and ineffective symbolic post of President, it is mainly because they see themselves too much as Philosopher-Kings to stoop to such low levels of political manipulations. They are no run-of-the-mill politicians like PV Narsimha Rao or Arjun Singh, but know how to segregate the real issues from the nominal ones.

There have been several instances where they have shown their considerable influence that they wield within the system they head. Their well-thought decisions and comments have helped in spreading meaningful debates and instilling hope in the hearts of a billion souls that all is not lost in the face of corrupt politicians making hay hither and thither.

The selfless service rendered by two of the greatest philosophers who were made the ceremonial heads against their volition fills my heart with hope amidst darkness all around. I wait with bated breath for the next worthy successors for the Kings who are set to make an exit soon.
